This the first part of my memoir in progress, telling the story of how I got interested in hiking and how it kept me positive during a difficult time in my life. When I first set foot on the San Juan Loop trail, in December of 2007, I had no idea that hiking would become as important to me as it has. But almost immediately, I found myself enjoying the outdoors in a way that I never knew possible. Hiking helped me walk away from the rubble of a failed marriage and the my mother’s recent death and build a new life.
All experiences – hiking and otherwise – are reconstructed to the best of my memory. Some dialogue has been re-created and may not be entirely accurate, but the basic idea remains intact. My ex-wife’s name has been changed, but all other names and places are real. There is cursing and sex, but only when necessary. To begin the story, click here. If you would like to hear more beyond what is in this blog, or if you have any other feedback, please feel free to let me know in the comments or by email. Thanks for reading, and enjoy.
